I’ve had this filter for almost 2 months now. It’s being used to filter a 260ltr tank with central american cichlids and is doing a good job. The filter is relatively easy to set up but if you struggle then check out the videos on utube.
There are 4 rainbow cichlids about 4″ each, a trio of platys’ and two argumentative gold spot plecs at 6″ each. The plecs create a hell of a mess but the 406 handles it without complaint. This is mainly because the filter is big for this size of tank but I have found this to be a distinct advantage turning the water over at least twice an hour and when combined with weekly water changes leaves the water crystal clear.
The filter trays are easy to remove and all media is easy to access and replace, if a little expensive. The filter comes with the usual stuff in the trays i.e. foams, ceramic rings and carbon and I find no need to change any of this for my tank. Incidently, if you find it difficult to get replacements for the 406, the media from the 405, which the 406 replaces, fits.
The filter is quiet in operation and fit nicely in the cabinet this tank sits on. I wash the foam regularily in aquarium water when doing water chages and will replace any media I feel needs it no matter what fluval recommend.
Down side and how it compares to my other filters (I have 3 tanks)… It does not come with a spray bar (this will cost you £10/12). You may find you need one as it has a good flow rate that some fish will find it difficult to cope with if not subdued with a spray bar ( there is a facility to reduce the flow a little but i’d stick with the bar).
The internal fittings are made of a very obvious clear plastic with WHITE connectors. What genius at Fluval thought that one up. It’ll soon calm down, but white, c,mon.
YOU have to fit a couple of parts but this is easy and is dealt with in the instructions.
Filter media is expensive but not really any more than other makes.
It’s an expensive filter for what it offers (some would offset this with Fluvals reputation for quality)
Conclusion…It compares well to the other filters I have although they came with spray bars and I didn’t have to fit any parts. It comes with a 3 year warranty which is good but do check with your supplier who you claim from in the event of a breakdown. My other filters are from reputable manufacturers with reputations for quality and were cheaper than the fluval. I’m pleased with the Fluval and am hopping it offers the same reliability as my others. Hope this helps.

UPDATE:…A few months on (it’s now 23/3/13) the filter continues to offer good service and continues to be easy to maintain (provided you maintain it). That said, I was not happy with the hoses and fittings that came with it. Nothing wrong with them, just highly visible and akward to fit in the lid of this Juwel tank, so I managed to find a set of Tetra pipes which fit perfectly in the cut outs in my hood AND work perfectly with the Fluval. I mentioned above, the facility to reduce flow from the filter and my preference to use a spray bar (again it’s a Tetra) to do this. Well, the adjustment works very well if you need it, just be careful not to turn it down too far, in doing so you also reduce the turn over in the tank. I contiue to moan at the cost of filter media but..ho hum! The Rainbows are breeding like rabbits (this is where I used the flow adjuster to prevent the little darlings going down the tube) and all’s well with the world. Good luck!!

Fantastic bit of kit. Water so much cleaner, and replacement filter are a lot cheeper than my old juwel. And a lot less maintenance
