Interpet Replacement Carbon Foam Filter Pads are a chemical filtration device. Chemical filtration takes place through the black foam which has been impregnated with carbon. Carbon foam filter pads help remove toxic heavy metals, odours, chlorine, unwanted treatments and water discolouration. Please remove your carbon filter when treating your aquarium as the carbon will remove the treatment from the water, rendering them ineffective. Please replace the Interpet Carbon Filter every 8 weeks in the back of your PF filter. 1 pack containsÃ' 3 foam pads.

Marina i25 Internal Filter

  • The Marina i25 internal filter is a compact, powerful filter with 3 stage easy maintenance power cartridge. Suitable for aquariums upto 25 litres.
  • Removes pollutants and odours.
  • Removes toxic ammonia.
  • Captures floating debris.
  • Waterfall spout for oxygenation.

The Marina i25 Internal Filter is suitable for up to 25l (6.6 U.S gal.)

Compact and powerful, it features a waterfall spout for oxygenation. As well as this, the filter has a unique design that allows the water to enter through the centre of the cartridge as it is split into two different chambers. This allows for 3-in-1 mechanical, biological and chemical filtration.

The water enters the first chamber (the zeolite chamber) that removes toxic ammonia. It then enters the activated carbon chamber to remove all pollutants and odours. Finally the water enters the floss layer which traps any debit inside the cartridge. This unique flow of water results in crystal clear water.

For best results replace every four weeks. Ideal for Goldfish and Tropical tanks.

Seems to be reliable – just a bit fiddly to assemble. My fish have been much healthier and happier since they had a new filter.

Tricky to put together, 9 Aug 2012

I wanted a second small filter in my main tank so that I can transfer it to my shrimp tank when it finally arrive (stupid Yodel!) and not need to wait to cycle it. This was posted by Amazon via Royal Mail after my shrimp tank which was via Yodel and yet this arrived first in Shetland!

Anyway on to the filter, it is nice a compact and comes with various mounting option. It works by having a pump at the bottom (most power filters have the pump at the top) drawing in water and then blasting it through the filter cartridge. The cartrige is a frame with a hole in the bottom for the water to enter and filter materials covering it. Within the cartrige, there are some zeolite and activated carbon. However the cartridge is not airtight sealed, so I strongly doubt the carbon are still active on arrival. The water then overflow out of the filter via the slot shown in the picture. This is all held together with another frame within the filter body. This frame lift out so the pump can be serviced and clean. This frame is made of softish plastic and it is diffcult to line the cartrige up with the pump outlet. Took me a while to figure out that the best way is to actually remove the frame and fit the cartrige and put it back together again. Not really as dry as they claim since the whole thing need removal from the water.

Now the filter cartrige, because of the way it is made, it is not possible to replace it with other filter. The best way to describe it is pushing water into a pillow case containing all the filter materials but there is no way to get the dirty bits out. You are forced to use their Power Cartrige units. Some people claim that the zeolite is not actually good in a filter but because it is sealed in the filter cartrige, it is not possible to remove it. Someone suggested cutting the filter material, but I cannot see this working as it will force the water straight out of the cartrige instead of through the filter material as one would expect. Also because of the inside out method, it is not possible to clean the filter material as all waste are trapped inside the cartrige. Rinsing and cleaning it in old tank water is just not possible.

The water is returned via the slot as I mentioned above, with a waterfall effect. With the tank water up to the slot, it is almost silent. The difference with this filter compared to most power filters are it can work when most of it is out of the water, only the pump, which is right at the bottom of the filter, needs to be under water. If it is lifted higher up, the noise of the water hitting the tank water will be louder, but still acceptable in the living room I feel.

This filter comes with many fitting option, the first one is to fit it level with the edge of the tank, and clips are provided. Or it can be fitted higher then the edge of the tank, to create a greater waterfall effect, for better oxygen exchange, and again clips are provided. Or it can even be totally mounted inside the tank with suckers underwater (not recommended as you will not have the waterfall effect which allows oxygen exchange). While it is good having so many choice, do be careful (if you decide to get one) to block the 2 upper holes in the body before turning it on, either with the higher clip or with suckers provided. Because the water comes from below and overflow from the top, water will exit from these 2 holes. I had a wet floor because I took it out when it was running without blocking the holes and water spray out of them.

    Plus points:
Waterfall effect is good for oxygen exchange and the current is not too strong.
Can work with really low water level (about 30mm?).
    Relatively silent.
    Various mounting option.

    Minus points:
Filter impossible to clean, waste are trapped inside the filter with no way to wash out. (can be a plus point depending on your view)
Zeolite and activated carbon not really needed in a filter. (except in special use)
Tricky to put together and can spray water everywhere if not careful. (Take it apart completely first to study it before putting it in and turning it on)

For around £10, I think it is ok. Just that replacement cartrige cost about £2 each and everytime you replace a cartrige, you loose all the good bacterial and risk crashing your tank and killing all your fish.

UPDATE: I transfered it to my 25l tank which finally arrived. This is in my weekend bedroom and a buzzing was driving me nuts. It turns out that the cable which goes to the bottom of the filter is not a tight fit, thus causing the buzzing noise. Also Marina claimed that you can keep your hands dry when changing the filter, this is only true if you used the mid position clip or suckers only. If you fit the top of the filter level with the glass, the clip will block the cartiage from being removed.
