The Goldfish and the Earthquake (coming-of-age pyschological drama)

Following the loss of his mother to cancer, sheltered teenager George is thrown out of his aunt’s house and picked up one morning by his father to live with him, from whom he’s only had the occasional visit.

As a package deal come George’s stepmother, who has a curious interest in him, and Albert, his troubled, narcissistic younger half-brother, who struggles to come to terms with his only-child status ending. If he is to build a relationship with his father, he must befriend Albert, with dire consequences.

For fans of We Need to Talk about Kevin or for anyone who has come up against one child’s innate evil, The Goldfish and the Earthquake is the story of a teenager’s struggle to find happiness after the death of his mother, in the face of someone determined to make his life a living nightmare.

George thinks he knows Albert, warts and all, but he's only glimpsed his dark side.

I couldn’t resist a novel with such an unusual title. It’s not often that you find the words goldfish and earthquake in the same sentence! I liked the book right from the opening chapter. It made me chuckle thinking about sleeping through an earthquake. In the UK they happen so rarely, it’s an absolute crime to miss them!

Reading on, I enjoyed the story, and I thought that the author explored the relationship between the central characters beautifully. It’s a deep and thoughtful book, very descriptive, and definitely worth a look.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fiction that is sensitively written, with plenty of twists, turns and intrigue.

It has been a long time since I hated a character in a book quite as much as I hated Albert – and I mean that in the best possible way!

This story had a haunting start, which stays with you as you read your way through, bringing the reader towards the crescendo. It’s a very “real” story, the scenes D J Taylor describes are very realistic, very British, and very (as far as I can see) teenage-boy-ish. Initially I wasn’t sure if I would enjoy this book (not being a teenage boy and all!) but actually… I really did find myself hooked on it!

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. The author has created atmospheric tensions between the two leading characters so well. Your attention is kept all the way through this book. The use of language is superb and the author clearly has a grasp of the depth and complexity of relationships. A great read.
