This really is a vey well laid out bbok, its practical advise is clear and easy to follow. The author contrasts both up-to-date advice on planning, equipping, stocking and maintaining an aquarium with traditional advise. This shows at a glance both how the hobby has evolved and that new techniques are easier for the beginner. The book includes details of how to avoid the classic saltwater set up mistakes, and is well as using good diagrams to detail the step-by-step startup and aquascaping techniques.
It discusses low-maintenance, high-success filtration using live rock and includes checklists for both equipment and fish purchases.

I’m still researching setting up a marine aquarium (at the moment the problems of a potential long distance move are stopping me). However this 144 page book has at least pointed out all the things I need to consider. It points out some pitfalls in tank shape and gives an overview of all the additional equipment needed over and above a tropical set up. Simple line drawings and glossy pictures abound in the pages of this book.

I’m very impressed by the do-it-yourself suggestion for curing your own live rock. Technically this is smelly and long winded but it looks like it saves an awful lot of money as you can do it in a plastic bin with a powerhead and a heater. (These may be famous last words from the raw prawn reviewer).

He also suggests a minimalist set up for a 15-20 gallon/(57-76 litres assuming US gallons) beginners tank with a clear shopping list and an alternative selection of fish and invertebrates. The only worry I have is that other books seem to contradict the cosiness of the community. Still what would fish keeping be without tears, credit cards and unpredictably behaving beasties? There’s also a page dedicated to 5 communities ranging from 40 to 120 gallon set ups.

All in all, as the point is to plunge in and learn by experience, you might as well use Mr Paletta as your guide.
