TROPICA® - Umbrella Plant/Umbrella Sedge (Cyperus alternifolius syn. Cyperus involucratus) - 250 Seeds

Worth knowing: The umbrella plant is just one of almost 600 species of decorative, rush-like grasses. The plant has a palm-like appearance, because the thin leaves are arranged like an umbrella at the end of the stem. Native to Central and South Africa, it produces a rhizome, meaning it widens constantly and can be divided as well. This grass is suited for both indoor and tub cultivation. It grows about 1,50-1,80 m in heigt and develops round to triangular stems. The leaves can grow up to 25 cm long and 1 cm wide. Being a marsh plant, the umbrella plant loves constant wetness. Because of its elegant appearance and due to the fact that it is so easy to care for, this plant is very popular and about to be rediscovered.

Origin: The umbrella plant is indigenous to Central and South Africa as well as Madagascar.

Propagation: The seeds can be started indoors at any time throughout the year. Distribute the fine seeds on moist cultivation soil, cover thinly and cover the container with transparent film or a glass sheet. Even humidity and warmth are ideal for a quite long lasting cultivation period of 4-6 weeks.

Planted in a bright and sunny position, strong and lushly growing plants will develop.

Care: Being cultivated as a pot or tub plant, the rhizome should not be overflown by water constantly, for this might interrupt the air circulation in the roots. Let the soil dry on briefly between waterings. The soil can be rich in nutrients and the plant should be supplied with universal fertilizer every 10-14 days from April until mid-September.

Winter period: The umbrella plant does not tolerate temperatures below zero and also needs less water during the winter months. The plants feel very well when placed in a bright and rather cool room (12°-18°C).
