Sorry excuse for an aquarium., 9 April 2013

This review is from: Umbra Fishhotel Fishbowl, White (Misc.)
One of the most idiotic tanks I’ve come across yet. Cruelty aside this is just a bowl in a PVC cube with squares cut out of it. The fact that the designer was so proud of this that he’s got his name in the description is beyond belief. This is the kind of stuff you expect to see peddled in the “kids section” of a pet store for under £10. Just shows how people will buy anything if you put the right words down.

Not suitable for any fish or shrimp, I wouldn’t even consider this suitable for a snail. Certainly no good for a Betta splendens (as pictured) due to general size and the lack of filtration or heating. 25L should be considered the absolute minimum for a Betta, this tank is measuring in at 7L. By the time you’ve removed some of that to account for water displacement by substrate/decorations and left a gap between the water line and the top… you might be looking at 6L or less.

I’d love to know who gave this pathetic excuse for an aquarium an award. Clearly no one who knows a thing about fish welfare.

A note to any new fishkeepers who are thinking of getting into the hobby and browsing these awful ‘starter’ tanks. Research everything, you can’t be too thorough. It is a myth that smaller tanks are easier to maintain. The smaller the volume of water, the faster pollutants build to toxic levels which in turn means a lot more maintenance. Always buy the biggest tank you can afford as it will be a lot less effort to maintain, will provide a better home for your fish and will just generally look nicer. If you’re clever with how you do it as well you’ll find the cost will be a lot less. Keep in mind that fish keeping is, as most hobbies are, an expensive one.

If you can not fulfil the basic requirements for the fish, then you can not keep it. Same as you wouldn’t adopt a dog and keep it in a cold room with no ventilation that was only twice the dogs length and not offer a bed, blanket, toys or exercise.

Take your time to save up and buy the proper gear, get a good plan in your head and research the fish you want before buying them. I can guarantee you’ll look back at this “bowl” with the same eyes that myself and others are currently.

EDIT: Review is a tad bit misleading. It was given an award due for its design and look (Umbra build a better student competition in 2009). It was NOT awarded anything for its suitability as an actual aquarium.

Why on earth would anyone keep a fish in such tiny, sterile conditions is beyond me. Fish are living things, not decorations, and in my opinion this tank is cruel. I would be very surprised if a fish lived longer than a few weeks in these conditions. I am an experienced fish keeper and this sort of product irritates me as it causes suffering for no reason other than to amuse people. If getting any kind of living pet, for goodness sake do some research about their individual needs. If we are going to keep pets the least we can do is provide them with adequate living conditions!

Unsuitable for any fish!, 7 Aug 2012

There seems to be a misunderstanding about what a betta (as pictured) needs. Just because it’s said that they live in puddles in the wild does not mean that they can live in jars, jugs, fishbowls or this. In the wild they live in puddles in rice fields which unlike the beautiful summer puddles we get on the pavements here stretch for miles and the betta swim from puddle to puddle. A betta needs at least 5 gallons to live a healthy life with decent but gentle filtration, air and heat, not to mention plants to sleep in and stimulation as a betta is far from dumb.
A goldfish needs at least 16 gallons and very good filtration to be a healthy fish, tetras, minnows etc live in shoals so need space etc…
There isn’t a single fish that is suitable for this tank. You could possibly get away with a snail if you did decent water changes or perhaps some pretty waterscape feature for your desk.. but no fish!
This is just cruel, it’s abuse. Cat’s don’t live in their carry cases and dogs don’t live in cardboard boxes… so why abuse your pet fish?
Please do research into any fish before you buy it and find out what they need, how much water, waste etc because for example, a goldfish can be quite a high maintenance pet.
This and the other ‘one fish’ tanks on amazon should be removed as they are just cruel.
