I would strongly advise to anyone considering buying this product and using this seller to think otherwise !
The product took nearly 2 months to arrive and when I fitted it in my kitchen the AC unit stopped working within 3 days ! I contacted the seller about this and they flat refused to except my return request due to being outside of the 90 day warranty period. I must have only had the product 2-3 weeks so I cant see how they could of claimed this anyway !
This is a cheap and nasty product being sold by a very unhelpful, slow, unresponsive seller.

      Faulty PSU, 19 Aug 2013

The light given by this five metre LED strip was not as bright as I had hoped but this was not my main complaint.

I constructed some aluminium reflectors on to which I stuck the strip, as suggested by a previous poster, to act as a heat sink and then tested my assembly to make sure all worked as expected. After several hours I had finally installed the lights in their final desired position and switched on all worked and everything appeared satisfactory.

Then came the evening and I could really see if the light would give the desired affect, yes it would, so I left the lights on at the desired setting. After about 45 minutes there was a loud bang and the power supply unit exploded. I switched off the power to investigate but the PSU was too hot to touch, when it had cooled down a subsequent inspection of the PSU I found that a good portion of the PCB and vaporised!
I suggest that the overheating of this unit could have resulted in a fire.

The strip of self-adhesive LED lights has a four way socket on each end, and a four pin double-mini-plug to fit either end. There are index marks on the connectors to guide us when plugging it into the socket of the control box lead or an extension lead. Be warned, it is just as easy to plug them together the wrong way round which might damage the LEDs. One should also bear in mind that this technology of coloured LED string will be less bright (even on white) than a modern white-only LED string with the same power usage.

Neither the Power Supply (12Volt, 5Amp) nor the little white Control Box seem to get too hot, merely warm and just rising a few degrees above ambient (about +5C for the Box and about +15C for the PSU after a four hour soak test, once installed). The LED strip however can get quite hot unless mounted on a nice cool surface, and I would not recommend running it for more than a minute or so from cold while still rolled up in the reel.

The IR Remote Control (IRRC) handset has a piece of plastic film sticking out, to save the battery when it is being stored; this film should be removed to allow the IRRC to work. Having separate buttons giving instant access to the various colours and pre-set choices is a great improvement on that for my other older strip of LEDs (four times the cost and fewer and less bright and where it is necessary to step forwards [no back step - aarrgghh] through all 32 combinations to get to the desired one).

I tested the LEDs and the Control Box and IRRC and PSU before even thinking about fitting them, just to make sure it all worked. The 4pin LED strip connectors are not brilliant on locking together and tend to self-unplug, so some tape will be needed to hold them together.

The installation as room background lighting is in some aluminium U channel (from B&Q) 2metres long by 13mm wide by 10mm high. I’ve not yet added the planned 12mm Perspex rods as a decorative diffuser stuck in on top with a tiny amount of clear silicon only at the aluminium edges. The idea being that the individual LEDs are less obvious as blinding hot-spots. (Pics will be posted here when it is all done, soon…)

Previous LED strips I have installed have remained well stuck, provided the surfaces were glossy smooth, clean, and free from all traces of moisture, grease and dust. I expect these SMD5050 to stick OK in the aluminium U channel, which will also be a useful heat-sink. I’m in two minds about the adhesive strength, because if it is too strong there could be a problem with damaging the strip if I have mis-stuck it and try to lift it to re-position, or too weak and the weight of the connecting leads can peel it off. So I compromised by using some strong d/s foam sticky tape to anchor the leads at each end, and then the much weaker LED strip d/s tape is sufficient (hopefully) to take the weight of the strip.

The LED strip can be cut at the marked points and suitable leads soldered to the copper pads or proprietary connectors clamped on. As an electronics engineer I prefer to solder and reseal with more silicone, but this is a delicate task and does require the right tools and some skill and experience to be able to do it properly.

The instruction sheet is microscopic (A7-ish), and it needs to be scanned and enlarged up to A4 to be readable. (I’ve posted a copy here).

      Addendum. 20th June 2013.

I’ve measured the current that the 5metre 300 LED strip and the control box consume from a 12V regulated bench power supply, and this totals a small fraction over 2 Amps for full brightness. The dimming steps are approximately a quarter Amp for each step down to the minimum brightness where the strip and controller together use an average of 260mA. Being a pulse-width modulated controller this actually means that the light is on at 2 Amps (about 680mA per colour) from (full) 8/8 of the time down to (dim) 1/8 of the time. Of course this was for White – which needs the maximum on each of the three colours, Red, Green, and Blue.

The controller is rated at 2 Amps per output, for a total of 6 Amps. Therefore with a 5Amp power supply there is enough spare capacity to safely add a second 5 metre strip.

      Addendum 2. 11th August 2013.

The sticky backing is inconsistent. Half the strip is well held, half has unstuck itself and needed to be re-stuck. The mounting surface is carefully cleaned and degreased aluminium channel (I used washing-up liquid, rinsed it well and finished off with methylated spirit). I wonder if the d/s really was 3M tape? The lights still work OK.

The “White” light colour is a little bit strange, and some things look wrong, for example our yellow Miele Vacuum cleaner looks a brownish…
